Intimate Partner Violence: How To Spot The Early Warning Signs

Know the signs of IPV and where to get confidential legal support through FIDA Uganda.

Intimate partner violence rarely begins with physical harm. More often, it starts with controlling behaviour — monitoring phone use, restricting movement, isolating someone from friends and family, or humiliating them in private or public.

Early warning signs may include jealousy framed as love, pressure to quit work or school, threats to withhold financial support, and destruction of personal property. Over time, these patterns can escalate to emotional, economic, sexual, and physical abuse.

Survivors should know that help is available. FIDA Uganda provides free, confidential legal advice on protection orders, child custody, property rights, and referral pathways to shelters and medical support.

If you or someone you know is experiencing intimate partner violence, call FIDA Uganda toll free at +256 800 111 511 or register a case online. Document incidents where safe to do so, keep copies of messages, and reach out before the situation escalates.
